Description
Africa Oyé, the UK’s premier free celebration of African music and culture, had been a vibrant fixture in Liverpool since its inception in 1992. Originally starting as a series of intimate performances in the city centre, the event flourished over the years, finding its permanent home in Sefton Park in 2002 due to overwhelming demand.
In a world where Africa was often unfairly associated with images of conflict, disease, poverty, and famine, Oyé served as a beacon of positivity. It strived to showcase the rich diversity of cultures, cuisines, music, and artists that defined this remarkable continent. By doing so, Oyé aimed to shift perceptions and highlight Africa's true essence as one of the most dynamic and inspiring regions on the globe.
Described not only as the largest but also the finest festival of African and Caribbean music in Britain, Africa Oyé stood as a testament to the richness and vitality of African culture.
