EXIT is a highly reputed summer music festival held within the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia. It features over 1000 performers on more than 40 stages and festival zones, placing it at the top rank of European events in music festivals.
The event has been recognized for the "Best Major European Festival" award during the EU Festival Awards in the years 2013 and 2017, and is considered as one of the most prestigious honours in this field. EXIT was also awarded the "Best Overseas Festival" in the UK Festival Awards in 2007 and ranked as the "Best Summer Music Festival in Europe" in 2016, according to the travel website "European Best Destinations," based on a selection from the European Commission. This festival was also awarded the Champion of Regional Cooperation for 2017 by the Regional Cooperation Council in March 2018.
In 2021, EXIT became the first major European festival to take place since the COVID-19 pandemic onset, gathering more than 180,000 visitors for four days. This edition of the festival marked its 20th birthday, highlighted by many international media outlets as an historic event-Billboard, Variety among others.
EXIT was originally founded in 2000 as a student movement at University Park, fighting for democracy and freedom in Serbia and the Balkans. After the Yugoslavian general election in 2000, the festival moved to the Petrovaradin Fortress in 2001 and has been held there ever since.
Over the years, EXIT has gained international attention and been featured in numerous major publications, including CNN, The Guardian, The Sun, Euronews, The New York Times, BBC, Forbes, The Times, MTV, Huffington Post, Conde Nast Traveller, Daily Mail, The Independent, and Lonely Planet, among others.
The EXIT team is also organizing seven more events in five cities of four Southeast European countries: Sea Dance Festival in Budva, Montenegro; Sea Star Festival in Umag, Croatia. Among them, No Sleep Festival in Belgrade was named "Best New Festival" during the EU Festival Awards in 2019, while Sea Dance Festival won the "Best Mid-Sized European Festival" in 2015.
Founded on the principles of youth rebellion and with a proclaimed aim of supporting freedom in Serbia and peace in the Balkans, the festival's mission statement has always underlined social change through music. The festival remains committed to social responsibility for environmental and humanitarian issues, creative industries development, and regional cooperation.
